When Floss the sheepdog has a litter of puppies, the farmer tells his children they can keep one to help on the farm. They watch Bess, Nell, Cap, Jack, and little Sam grow, wondering which will be just like Floss. One day, Sam strays into the field, bravely facing the sheep. The children cheer, realising Sam is the perfect choice—just like Floss.
