Alma Thomas, born in Georgia in 1891, was captivated by the vibrant colours of nature. Despite facing racial injustices, her family nurtured her creativity. After moving to Washington, D.C., Alma became an art teacher, inspiring many. At nearly seventy, she pursued her own art, creating bold, abstract paintings inspired by nature and space. She became the first Black woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum and to have her work displayed in the White House.
