Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old kaiju corpse cleanup worker, has long aspired to join the Japan Defense Force alongside his childhood friend, Mina. When a rule change extends the age limit for recruits, Kafka seizes the opportunity to pursue his dream. However, after an encounter with a parasitic creature, he gains the ability to transform into a kaiju, earning the code name Kaiju No. 8. Now, Kafka must navigate his dual existence while striving to fulfil his promise to Mina.
