During a thunderstorm at Marlinspike Hall, glass objects mysteriously shatter. Tintin and Captain Haddock discover that Professor Calculus's latest invention, a powerful ultrasonic device, is the cause. When foreign agents learn of its potential as a weapon, they kidnap Calculus. Tintin and Haddock embark on a perilous mission across Europe to rescue their friend and prevent his invention from falling into the wrong hands.
