When ten-year-old Theo runs away from a school trip in London, he expects to surprise his gran but instead finds himself alone and homeless. He is taken in by Alistair Goodfellow, whose shabby hotel becomes a palace of magic after dark. Alongside a lively group of runaways, Theo searches the city for lost magical artefacts and receives a power of his own. But Alistair’s mysterious plans grow more dangerous, and Theo must decide whom he can trust.
