What is A crack in the line about?

Sixteen-year-old Alaric is still struggling with the death of his mother in a railway accident when a strange crack in reality leads him to another version of his life. There, his mother survived—and someone called Naia occupies the place he should have held. As Alaric and Naia explore their almost identical worlds, they uncover unsettling connections between their families, memories and identities. But the more they interfere with each other’s lives, the greater the danger that one of their realities may disappear.
