When an escaped convict sends Dick a mysterious message in the middle of the night, the Famous Five are determined to discover what it means. Their questions lead them into the hills, where they encounter secret paths, suspicious strangers and danger at every turn. With the police unwilling to help, Julian, Dick, George, Anne and Timmy must rely on their courage, cleverness and teamwork.
