Synopsis

In Vienna, Duke Vincentio pretends to leave, appointing the strict Angelo as his deputy. Angelo enforces old laws, sentencing Claudio to death for premarital relations. Claudio's sister, Isabella, pleads for mercy, but Angelo demands her virtue in exchange. Disguised as a friar, the Duke orchestrates a plan involving Mariana, Angelo's former betrothed, to expose Angelo's hypocrisy. Justice prevails, leading to marriages and the Duke proposing to Isabella.
