After his father's death, twelve-year-old Peer Ulfsson is sent to live with his malevolent uncles near Troll Fell, a mountain inhabited by trolls. Forced into servitude, Peer befriends Hilde, a spirited neighbour, and the Nis, a mischievous house spirit. Together, they uncover a sinister plot: Peer's uncles plan to sell children to the trolls in exchange for gold. Determined to thwart this scheme, Peer and his allies embark on a perilous adventure to rescue the kidnapped children and confront the treacherous trolls.
