On a freezing New Year's Eve, a poor young girl tries to sell matches on the streets. To keep warm, she lights the matches and, in their glow, envisions comforting scenes: a warm stove, a festive feast, and her beloved late grandmother. As the matches burn out, she peacefully joins her grandmother in the afterlife, leaving behind a world that overlooked her struggles.
