What is Sayonara, Mrs. Kackleman about?
When Alexander suggests visiting Japan, his older sister Lulu readily agrees—especially because it means escaping her piano lesson and the dreaded Mrs Kackleman. Arriving in Tokyo without their parents, the children encounter bustling markets, curious customs, communal baths, futons, unfamiliar foods and an eccentric guide. Along the way, they meet a frog who writes haiku and see the country through their own lively, imaginative eyes. Maira Kalman’s energetic words and richly detailed illustrations create a funny, dreamlike travel adventure.
