What is Sugar about?

In 1870 Louisiana, ten-year-old Sugar works long days cutting sugar cane on a plantation where freedom still feels far away. When Chinese workers arrive to help with the harvest, many people fear and mistrust them. Sugar, however, is curious and soon befriends Beau and Master Liu, while continuing her friendship with Billy, the plantation owner’s son. As tensions grow, Sugar must find the courage to bring people together and show that understanding can grow from the most unexpected friendships.
