Tom is a young chimney sweep trapped in the filthy, dangerous world of Victorian industry. While working for the cruel Mister Crow, he begins to see strange things: fairies among the flowers, a soot monster in the chimneys and Elle, a mysterious river spirit. When Elle joins Tom and the other child sweeps, they face their most perilous job yet. As danger closes in, Tom discovers why Elle has appeared—and must find the courage to confront a terrible truth.
