In 1914, on the Isles of Scilly, ten-year-old Gracie and her friend Daniel are warned to avoid the reclusive Birdman. Defying the warnings, they befriend him and uncover the truth about the cursed Samson Island. When stranded there, they must confront the island's dark past and work together to save a group of stranded whales, challenging the superstitions of their community.

Michael Morpurgo is a much-loved British author who has written over a hundred books for children. He is best known for his story 'War Horse', which was made into a play and a film. Michael often writes about animals and adventures, inspiring children to imagine exciting worlds and discover the magic of stories.
