Synopsis

Opal Plumstead, a bright and determined fourteen-year-old, dreams of attending university. However, when her father is imprisoned, she must work at the Fairy Glen sweet factory to support her family. There, she befriends Mrs Roberts, the factory's owner and a passionate suffragette, who introduces Opal to the women's rights movement. As Opal becomes involved, she meets Morgan, Mrs Roberts' charming son. But with the onset of the First World War, Opal's life takes an unexpected turn.
